The first time one hikes up Tumbledown Mountain in Weld, Maine, they come upon a wonderful surprise of a pristine little pond near the very top. Such rugged rocks jut out and up beyond it, with so many places all around to take up a spot and have a picnic or take a little dip in the pond to cool off before heading down.
Maine has so many beautiful little romantic places. I like to share the ones I have experienced through my paintings, especially the western Maine mountains that I love to hike. Morning Mist at Bailey's Mistake

When I am out driving around looking for a place that speaks to me, I am always hesitant to set up at places that say 'No Trespassing" This is just such a place. I wanted so much to stay and paint but it was so uninviting with numerous signs, that I merely stayed for a few minutes to take photos before I got back into my jeep and sadly drove back down the hill.
Consequently I had to paint this one in my studio back home. But I have been to this spot so many times that I could practically paint it from memory anyway.
It was an especially lovely day with tamerack trees swaying in the wind, the fireweed brilliant, and topped off by big white puffy clouds; therefore I named it "Clouds Over Cutler". This painting was done from my trip downeast last summer. I was trying to find a way to get to some hiking trails on the coast and on my return, this amazing view was in front of me. It was a very narrow road with no place to stop and paint. So I pulled over for a few minutes and took some photos. But I love that place so much, I think that will be my very first stop when I go down there again this summer. And I will look around a bit more to find a spot to set up and paint plein aire!

A Sugarloaf Evening

As you drive north on Route 27, from Farmington, you round a corner and suddenly appearing in front of you is Sugarloaf Mountain! She stands there majestically,boldly inviting. And you may exclaim "O My Gosh!", hence the name of the corner. It is very impressive and if you are a skiier; you can't wait to get up on those trails.

I have painted this in summer and winter, this is a late season period, when the snow still clings to the mountain for those last ski runs and has mostly melted from the fields. A reminder of good times and another winter in Maine.

Last week I packed up my oil paints and drove up Route 17 to Oquossoc. Along the way is the most charming little fishing spot, Beaver Pond. After driving to the Height of Land, which is a panoramic view of the Richardson Lakes, I turned around and headed south towards Byron to situate myself on the east shore of this little pond as dusk settled in. I met a friendly teen who was fishing with her father there. They were among many who caught their limit of trout after a hard day at work. I just love this spot and probably will return to paint other times of day and seasons.

Maple Sunrise. This is my little sap house where many happy, and often anxious, hours were spent boiling down sap to make sweet maple syrup. There were many state laws to follow, many traditions in methods and many ideas on how to best accomplish the task. The sap house was in operation from about 1980-1986. The building still sits cosily awaiting the bustling of steam rising out of the center vents in the darkness of the crisp, cool night, the heat from the arch keeping a distance, the night lights glowing while the full bulk tank of sap gravitates to the heat. Wondering its fate as the maple orchard is crowded out by softwoods.

Dusk Settling Behind Sugarloaf

This is a view from Ira Mountain. We arrived at the top just about as the sun had settled behind the distant peaks. There was Sugarloaf, distinct and majestic that it is, basking in the soft evening light of late summer. What a wonderful drive up Ira Mountain on a steep, winding road with deep drop-offs. I wouldn't want to do it in the winter, but if I did, I'll bet it would be worth it!

Bigelow Peaks at Sunset

This little painting was done from our picnic table the last evening we spent at Cathedral Pines Campground. The light was changing rapidly and I had to work fast. Blueberry Barrens

On the other side of the highway along the road to Starbird was this blueberry field looming up in front of me. It was magnificient, just the field I had been hankering in my mind to paint. When we get there in August, there is not generally much color, perhaps a slight blue hue across the field by the second week, so this is typical. The vehicles were coming and going all day along a road near the woods. Old rattley farm trucks with wood sideboards loaded with blueberry crates, beat up old cars and pickup trucks filled with pickers to once again hunch over their work in the hot sun. I cannot wait to return there next year and see it in July. And I do so want to go in September some time when the fields turn red and paint that too.

Hamilton Cove and Grand Manan

This is the other Hamilton Cove painting. I stayed pretty much in the same place as the other one but looked to my left where the boys were playing, throwing rocks, jumping back and forth across the stream. It is a rather small painting as it was getting rather damp and I was tired after standing at my easel all day long. I still had a bit of a hike to get out with all my gear and two wet paintings. Then the fog started coming in, it was beautiful. I love painting fog! But I couldn't stay. So I packed up and started to leave. A woman and her son, who was about 12 or 13, came along and offered to help carry my stuff out. He slung my packed easel over his shoulder, she took my paint box and I carried the wet paintings. It was a nice gesture that I gratefully accepted.

Mt Blue from Mosher Hiil, Farmington, Maine

This painting was started on location in a class with Ronal Parlin. I finished it in my studio much later. Mt. Blue is always one of my favorite mountains to paint. I grew up in the morning shadow of Mt. Spec, second highest mountain in Maine, so I suppose, subconsciously, I still search the landscape for beautiful, majestic mountains to paint. Mt. Blue is one I see often in my daily comings and goings and climb whenever I can. It is a fabulous mountain, one that deserves admiration and respect.

Overlooking Machias River

This is my favorite painting from my painting week at Tide Mill Farm this summer. At Kay's recommendation, I was on my way to check out the little coastal town of Starbird and saw this breathtaking overlook showing a bit Machias River, a lovely farm on the distant hill and blueberries in the foreground. I propped up my hatch for shade and my sunbrella and spent most of the day right there. The next day I went back with a friend. She painted this side while I painted the blueberry barrens on the other side, which I'll post later.

Hamilton Beach, Maine

Hamilton Cove is a lovely cove, just a short hike off the highway near Cutler. There are nature trails that lead along the coastline to the east. But I was content to plunk myself there, backing up to the bank in the back to get a bit of shade from the burning sun. It was a lovely day but the weather on the sea was unsettled. I watched the fog gradually move across the island in the distance, managing to capture about half of it before it was totally lost in fog. A couple of pre-teen boys were playing near the brook around the beach to my left. Although I could hear their voices, and except for a word or two here and there, I could not make out what they were saying. I was fascinated that two young boys could spend all day just throwing rocks into a brook. What fabulous summer memories they will have of Hamilton Cove in their adult years!

Quoddy Lighthouse Beach and Grand Manan

This was painted on location on the east side of Quoddy Lighthouse. There is a nice little beach way down there and so totally inaccessible. If one were to find their way there, they would have to leave before high tide! It is a lovely view, looking towards Campobello.

Clouds Across the Bay (Looking across to Campobello)

It was fun parking along side the narrow road to Quoddy State Park, looking across the road where pink fireweed was prolific against the dreary fog and clouds beyond it. The scene looks across the bay to Campobello. To the left was Lubec, but that is a whole other painting. My friend did a little pastel from the back of the Jeep, while I sat on a rock painting in oil. We did not return during our week there, but it will definately be on my list for next year.

Evening at Tide Mill Farm

The evening light is simply awesome at Tide Mill Farm but it changes rapidly. The trick is to work fast. The more plein air painting I do the more able I am to capture the moment. This makes for a more impressionist painting, but to me, that is what it is all about. The moment, the mood, the lingering shadows, the softness of colors. It is about making you imagine that you are there or bringing forth a memory for you of such a time that you also spent an evening beside the tidal bay waters.

I have only just left there and already am eager to return and paint more. We had a grand time painting, exploring, visiting. What more could anyone ask?

In the afternoon as the clouds settled over Grand Manan, I noticed some great reflections in the waters from Sail Rock, reported to be the easternmost point of land in the United States. It looks like a little sail sticking up there, but depending on how high the tide is, it could be a submarine.
So I painted this little scene, fascinated by the length and strength of the island of Grand Manan which lies in the distance.

Quoddy Light House - East Side

On our second day at the Lubec Artists' Retreat, my friend Tammy and I went to Quoddy State Park. We had seen a photograph of the lighthouse taken from the east side and wanted to catch the morning light on it. So we asked the Park Ranger, who has a very delightful dry sense of humor, how to get down there. He told us of the path known only by a few but did not say we could not go there. However he did not think there was much space on the cliff rocks for a couple of artists to set up. His motto was "let responsible people be responsible". I love it!
We wallowed thru tall thick grass and bushes to scout it out, and quickly returned to the Jeep for our supplies. Tammy, who is also adventurous, ordinarily would have joined me on the cliff rocks below, but she is suffering with hip and leg problems, so she settled in up on the grassy top, where she did a very fine, detailed watercolor. I climbed down below with my paint box and beach chair and didn't move until lunchtime.

Well, the sun did not co-operate for lighting up the east side for us, but it finally came out a bit before noon. I was happy just to be there and get this neat angle of the lighthouse and the keeper's house (now a museum) and not have it raining for a change! The results are this tiny oil on canvas. 2.5" X 7". Too small really to frame without a mat but it is a nice one for a study. I do want to go back next year and do a larger one. Or perhaps this winter in studio and work from my photos and memory.

Coos Canyon, Byron, Maine

In spring, the melting snow from the mountains fills the Western Maine streams with rushing water. Coos Canyon in Byron is a popluar place to go and watch the water rush over the rocks. This year, the heavy rains in June kept the waters high as it continues now. If you get a chance to go and have a picnic there, do it. It will be a wonderful memory. Evening Light on Bigelow Range

The first evening at Cathedral Pines Campground in Eustis, Maine, was warm and lovely. I wasted no time setting up my easel at the edge of the Dead River with part of the Bigelow Mountains in the background. The sun was setting low in behind me, creating a nice warm glow on the edge of the shore, the tree trunks and mountains. What a fabulous moment in time, a beaver swam by, a couple of ducks passed by looking for their supper and fish were jumping.

Tyler Cove, Umbagog Lake, Upton, Maine

Upon a return visit to the little town where I grew up, I wanted to do some painting around the lake, where I have some fond memories. Not many, though, as we lived on the other side of town and didn't get to the lake very often. Hiking in for school picnics or late night family smelting parties are about the only reasons, as I recall, for going to Tyler Cove on Umbagog Lake. Better to have a few fun memories of a place rather than a lot that don't mean anything, I suppose.
Since the water was high with spring rains, which left little beach and few rocks to sit on, I had to prop myself up in the bushes. The black flies were fierce, so I worked fast and hiked back out to my jeep without much delay. I had hoped for a better light but settled for the overcast sky with the sun popping out just enough to tease.

We love to go to Cathedral Pines Campground in the summertime and it is not so far that I cannnot commute to work. But on my days off I roam around there and paint many scenes, often out of the back of my jeep. Most of them I sell rather quickly as it is a very popular place and always produces a typical western Maine feeling. This view is from one of the few water sites, which is actually on the Dead River. It is very wide there and flows directly into Flagstaff Lake. A Pair of Mallards - Maine Lakes

In the spring there are many visitors by water. Here are a pair of mallards looking for some food and a place to nest. While my friend fed them pieces of bread, I was busy taking their pictures. After eating and splashing around in puddles on my lawn, they left and went to my neighbors to their usual nesting place for the summer.

Fishing in Spring Fog, Western Maine

One misty, cool spring day I was in my studio and I heard the faint sound of a small motorboat. It took some looking but finally I saw a couple of fisherman in a small motor boat passing by fairly close to shore. I don't know if they even saw me taking pictures, it was so foggy. But to me it was a scene that had to be painted. I'm sure they were absorbed in their own world out there. They blended in so well with the landscape - becoming one with nature. What more could one ask for?

Varnum Mountain in Spring - Western Maine

Another impressive mountain right near me. I watch it every day as I am coming and going from my road. Sometimes it seems large and comforting, sometimes it seems lower and dark. Long ago I climbed it but had to bushwack most of the way. I would like to go it again some time.
This particular spring day, it spoke to me. I sat in the back of my jeep and painted it while I watched smelters preparing to go out in the darkness to try their luck at the pond near the base of Varnum Mountain.

Red Camp - Western Maine Mountains and Lakes

This little Red Camp is my morning view looking east but I mostly love the way it looks when the last light of day streams across the lawn and highlights the roof. It looks so nice sitting on the point across the lake but unfortunately is becoming run down from lack of use and attention.

Lupine Field in Rangeley, Maine

In early summer, there is always plenty of lupine in Maine. There was a lady who would go around spreading lupine seeds and she became known as the "Lupine Lady". Apparently she loved to go to Rangeley, especially to the golf course. As soon as I heard about it, I made sure I was there at the peak of the blooms.

Tumbledown Sunset, Webb Lake Beach, Weld, Maine

As I arrived at the beach last summer, it was just as I had hoped, actually even better, the setting sun reflected a red glow across the water. A spectacular scene! The sun was setting in the crook of Tumbledown Mountain, almost backlighting the mountain range. The color was fleeting but I managed to get some great reference shots.

Back in my studio as the weather turns cold, I am warmed by the memory of that day spent in Weld, Maine. It was a lovely, warm, sunny day. I had gone to Kawannee Boys' Camp to visit a friend who gave me a wonderful walking tour and told me the history of the place. What a fabulous day it was.

Bigelow Range in Winter, Maine

Here is a winter view of the Bigelow Range as I saw it when snowmobling in cut over areas last winter. See the little trail going down through the woods. Snowmobiling gets me in places that I wouldn't ordinarily go in winter, close to mountains that would take hours to climb in the summer. The hardwoods have all dropped their leaves, making more open views to enjoy.

Rising Moon - West Farmington, Maine

As I was driving home from work near the last full moon, the sun was just setting, making a rosy glow in the whole sky. In the busy West Farmington intersection (well, busy for rural Maine), the red leaves of maples and orange and yellow leaves on other trees were waiting to dance in the moonlight as the old buildings stood by like quiet ancient sentinels. I drank it all in but drove on past, anxious to get home, but again, the whole image beckoned me in my rear-view mirror. I knew there was a painting or two waiting for a canvas so I turned around and pulled over and took numerous photos to work from. Then I couldn't wait to get to my studio and get it done. SOLD

Day's Last Light, Strong, Maine

The first autumn colors in western Maine come from what the old timers call "swamp maples". These maple trees are small and usually are a bright red. As I was driving home from Rangeley, along Route 4, there was a little meadow overgrown with bushes and small maples, all lit vividly by the setting sun. I knew in an instant that I HAD to paint that scene so I stopped and took many photos of it. It was so spectacularly brilliant that several others stopped to take photos too.

I think the mountain behind it is Day Mountain but I have to verify that with the locals. Hence the name, Day's Last Light, is suitable in in two ways.

Kibby Mountain in Autumn, Western Maine

As I was driving along, this mountain loomed up in front of me, glowing red and orange as the setting sun shone on the leaves still clinging to the trees. I have been up on top of Kibby (near Rangeley) several times in the winter on a snowmachine but it was a real treat to see it in it's fall dress!

Here is a little painting that I did last summer on location when we were at Letchworth State Park in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. It's a wonderful, very UN-crowded park with a breathtaking deep canyon and three waterfalls. Every year we explore a bit further into the park. Every year I find new places to hike. This year a trail took me down into the gorge, some of which I will paint this winter from photos.

On a lovely August day, I took my paints and easel and went down to Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth where I sat on the rocks and painted the outermost lighthouse. It is a lighthouse made famous by many artists as it is such beautiful setting and has magnificent old buildings. I felt priviledged to be painting there. My third and final painting while I was up at Cathedral Pines is from the causeway above the Pines, looking down over the Bigelow Range. Sugarloaf Mountain peeks up there in the center of it all. I got up very early to catch the early sun. It was lovely and quiet. A mother duck brought her large brood very near where I was painting. The light changed quickly as the mist rose and the shadows changed, but I captured the essence of the dawn. The early sunlight made the little islands glow on the east side while the west side remained dark.

Maine - The Horns, North Branch of Dead River

This is the second painting from the Causeway at the North Branch of the Dead River. Late in the day a big cloud came over, darkening "The Horns" making them stand out against the softness of the afternoon and look so magnificent. A lone red kayak added to the scene with two people paddling slowly down the river. Many blackbirds entertained me with thier songs while enjoying the marshy area. It was a lovely time to be painting that scene and the bugs weren't too bad.

Bigelow Range and Cathedral Pines paintings

Cathedral Pines is a lovely family campground in the town of Eustis, Maine. The sites on the North Branch of the Dead River have fantastic views. I did several paintings there and will post them here on my blog. The first one is done from the Causway where the road curves around the bend in the river and crosses over it. I set up in the back of my jeep with plenty of bug spray applied. It was a misty day and before long it started to rain and the painting became soft and misty looking. It shows the Bigelow Range with the Horns and Cranberry Mountain. Both of which I had climbed a couple of years ago.

Small's Falls

It is a lovely spot, along Route 4 along the road to Rangeley and Saddleback Mountain, to stop and have a picnic, do a short hike, or go for a quick swim in the cold mountain spring water, or just to have a look around at the beautiful scenery and feel the power of the water rushing down over the falls from the mountains above. I have been jolted out of hibernation by phone calls inquiring about my paintings,a few recent sales and calls to art shows. So here I go again. Today I decided to do a painting of a very popular place along Route 4 to Rangeley, Small's Falls. Last summer I hiked up along the trail beside it. Beyond this falls you see in my painting, there is another smaller one. Off on the other side of the hill another branch has another wider falls. It is all very spectacular and powerful. Sebago Lakes - Maine

Here is a painting I did on location at Sebago Basin. It is a small area that looks into the larger Sebago and Little Sebago Lakes. There is a dam near where I sat which lets water into a canal. The scene reminds me of Downeast where I go to paint in August. The weather was a warm and sunny 68 degrees and no snow on the ground. Very unusual for January in Maine. Rounding Pine Point - Maine

This is an elderly couple who used to go out paddling their canoe on the pond every day that the weather would allow. Occasionally I would be out there fishing with my husband and snap some shots of them for future paintings. They are gone now as are a lot of the Pine Point trees. It's sad how things familiar change so rapidly. I feel that I have been called to record some of these things with paint and pallet for future generations to see. Quaint Cottage, New Brunswick

The next day we returned to NB and stopped along the road by a house that had beautiful flowers all around it. The ocean was down over the bank, making a scenic backdrop for the gardens in the back and side. It was very tastefully landscaped, giving the house a "cottage look". We knocked on the door and explained that we are artists and want to paint her lovely house and flowers. The elderly lady was pleased and invited us in. She led us down long hallway, pausing to introduce us to her family photo gallery, then continued through the main floor of her house. Her husband had died recently. Was she lonely for a bit of company, or was she perhaps just being friendly, as are most Canadians? I even thought she was going to invite us to supper, and she probably would have but we eager to get painting. The daylight was getting away from us so we took photos and left. This one was completed in my studio back home with a pallet knife on panel. Hopefully it reflects the friendliness and warmth that we received at that home. I call it Quaint Cottage; it is 8 X 10. Liberty Point, Campobello, Canada

In August from Lubec, Tammy and I crossed over the border to Campobello Island and drove around for a couple of hours seeing the sights, stopping for a leisurely picnic lunch at East Quoddy Lighthouse. Then we drove to the southern tip of the island to Liberty Point and set up and painted. Tammy has one she has been working on for the past two summer trips, looking back towards West Quoddy Lighthouse. I painted the Frog at Liberty Point with a palette knife and brush combo. Grand Manan Island in the distance. The frog rock looks more like a frog from further off. However I liked the spot I was in, the deep blue of the ocean, the lush greens on the coast, the wind keeping the flies off us. Tomorrow I will post another done in Canada. West Quoddy Lighthouse, Lubec, Maine

Now you will be able to see some of my work a bit to the south of where we stayed in Whiting. This is the West Quoddy Light House, the easternmost point in the United States. It is in a beautiful State Park with trails all through it. Some of the trails are a bit steep and twisting and turning along the rugged coast. Often you will come to a place where the view is absolutely breathtaking. I love to backpack my paints in there and find a spot and sit and paint.

For this painting of the lighthouse, the distant islands, the well-worn path and the wind-blown trees, it was a glorious day. I was pestered some by those stinging black flies that look like houseflies, swatting them, all the while trying to balance everything on the hot, uneven rocks. After a short time, my neck felt hot from the sun so I painted hastily, however, I still got a bit of a burn. A few hikers pause to watch me work, some stop and chat a bit and then move on.

A Painting A Day - Whiting Bay from Cobscook State Park, Maine

As soon as we arrived at the campground and got set up, I had to go down to the water's edge and start painting the evening light. It left a soft light green across the marshy grass and a rosy glow in the sky. It was good to be back and I was so happy to climb down over the steep bank with my pallet and paint box and easel to capture a bit of God's green earth, blue water and warm, pink sky.

Here are some paintings from Cobscook Bay, which is near Lubec, Maine. It is a breathtakingly lovely place. There is never a lack of a place to paint. Whether the fog is in or out, it is still so beautiful. For this painting I got up very early and looked out over two islands jutting out in low tide. After I finished the painting, I was able to walk out there. It was actually quite a climb getting to the top of it. This one SOLD the day I got back from Lubec. A Painting a Day - Lubec Fireweed

Today is the 13th and I thought it was the 15th, so now I have a gift of two extra days, right? Just to catch up, I'll post some paintings I did at Lubec, Maine in August. It is a very picturesque place. I could live there but it is very far from everywhere and I'd probably get lonesome for my family and friends and the beautiful mountains of Western Maine. The fireweed is lovely in August and I never tire of painting it. These paintings have been SOLD. If you are interested in purchasing fireweed paintings, please email me. Today I cleaned up my studio so I can paint again! Hooray! I love it! So I got busy and did a little painting of Mt. Katahdin in Maine that I have been wanting to do. For some reason, I digressed from my usual pallette knife technique and used my brushes. It is an 8" X 6" on panel. A Painting a Day - Farmhouse in Winter

This is a little farmhouse near where I live. Every day I drive past it at least twice and I admire it and long to paint it. The tree which arches up around it drew my attention so one day a couple of winters ago, when we had some snow, I decided to paint it. If I pass by it at the right time, I catch the sun coming upon it or setting behind it. In all lights it is charming and I plan to paint it many times.

Kingfield Farm at Sunset

Today it is chilly, just below freezing, so I went to the basement to light a fire in the old Ashley there. It helps to keep the house an even heat. I had to go thru my studio to get the wood. My! what chaos! How did it get so bad so quickly. Even with the mess, it looked good to me and gives me the urge to get back at it again. Especially these cold days when I have to have a fire as that is my only heat in the studio and it becomes warm and cozy. I am inspired to paint scenes that I grew up with only now am seeing them in a new way. I need to get them on canvas.
Here is one I did a month or so ago. It's a lovely little farm in Kingfield, on the outskirts of Sugarloaf, which can be seen in the sunset. Sorry folks, this one has been sold. Cobscook Bay State Park

After spending the weekend in Portland with my friend who is recovering from his recent hip replacement, it's good to get home, however, not in time to get any painting done. Right now I am focusing on marketing and that is a very necessary thing too.

This is how I spent my evening, rather than painting, so here is a painting from this summer when the lupines were in bloom. They are colorful and fill whole fields here in Maine. There was a "Lupine Lady" about mid-1900's who spread the seeds wherever she went. She has beautified our state in her own way. Her legacy now blooms on artist's canvases all over the state and graces homes everywhere.
