Beaver Pond

Beaver Pond Rt 17
As I was driving south along Route 17 from Height of Land, the soft evening light of a late autumn day was settling over the mountains to the west. At the bottom of a big hill I passed this little pond. There were a few vehicles parked there and some men were fishing along the shore. One had his young son with him and he came over to see what I was doing, parked on the opposite side of the road and sitting under the hatch of my Jeep, as I often do when painting plein air. We chatted a bit and then he went on the the business of fishing.
This is a lovely spot and I want to return to see it in the early morning light and in different seasons.
This framed 14x11 oil painting is $229 (plus tax in Maine). Please contact me by email if you wish to purchase it. melanie.farmer@gmail.com.

Mt. Blue Pond

Mt. Blue Pond is tucked away in the woods a few miles from Route 4 in Avon. A local historian brought it to my attention earlier this year and I just had to go see for myself as I did not recall ever having been there. On the way in I passed a very old cemetery and made a mental note to stop and check it out on the way back.
When I arrived, there were quite a few people near the shore, enjoying picnicking and fishing. As I chatted with a fellow from Portland, I wondered how someone who lives so far away knows these places, when I, who lives just on the other side of Mt. Blue, does not.  I made my way through the muddy landing to the edge of this small pond, and was amazed to suddenly see Mt. Blue so close to my face! If it did not have the tower, which was rebuild a few years ago, I would not have known it was Mt. Blue. What an absolutely wonderful spot!
On my way out, I did stop at the cemetery and, as I suspected, found many of my Hunt and Haines ancestors buried there. They have been in my genealogy records for many years, but I just had never gone to see where they were buried. I lingered awhile, took pictures of the stones, imagining what life was like, what the landscape was like, or what the people were like living so long ago in the shadow of the magnificent Mt. Blue in Maine.
I will be back to visit that area again soon.

Tyler Cove, Umbagog Lake, Upton, Maine

Upon a return visit to the little town where I grew up, I wanted to do some painting around the lake, where I have some fond memories. Not many, though, as we lived on the other side of town and didn't get to the lake very often. Hiking in for school picnics or late night family smelting parties are about the only reasons, as I recall, for going to Tyler Cove on Umbagog Lake. Better to have a few fun memories of a place rather than a lot that don't mean anything, I suppose.
Since the water was high with spring rains, which left little beach and few rocks to sit on, I had to prop myself up in the bushes. The black flies were fierce, so I worked fast and hiked back out to my jeep without much delay. I had hoped for a better light but settled for the overcast sky with the sun popping out just enough to tease.

Western Maine Mountain Range

Here is a painting I did from near the top of Ira Mountain in Kingfield, Maine. What breathtaking views all the way up and all the way down! I don't know all the mountains and bodies of water that I could see, but they are all put together in such a magnificent way.

If you are interested in purchasing this original 8 x 6 oil painting on panel, please email me at melanie.farmer@gmail.com. SOLD.

Red Camp - Western Maine Mountains and Lakes

Since this is a busy time of year at work and also in painting requested places, I'll take this time to list my older paintings which got missed along the way.
This little Red Camp is my morning view looking east but I mostly love the way it looks when the last light of day streams across the lawn and highlights the roof. It looks so nice sitting on the point across the lake but unfortunately is becoming run down from lack of use and attention.
With the assistance of binoculars for some of the details, I painted this one from my studio.
If you are interested in purchasing this 10 X 8 original oil on panel, please contact me by email. melanie.farmer@gmail.com $169 framed in a 2" gold frame (plus shipping and, if in Maine, sales tax).

Day Lilies on Varnum Pond

Since I was going to be in a show held at Robin's Flower Pot, a lovely greenhouse business, I decided I should paint a few floral paintings. Here is one of those lovely orange Day Lilies that grow wild along the road or the shore of a body of water. Here in the serene mist of a Varnum Pond morning, they brightened the day.
