Two Lights, Cape Elizabeth, Maine coast

On a lovely August day, I took my paints and easel and went down to Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth where I sat on the rocks and painted the outermost lighthouse. It is a lighthouse made famous by many artists as it is such beautiful setting and has magnificent old buildings. I felt priviledged to be painting there. And I want to return many times and paint it from a different angle as well. This one has been sold but if you are interested in future Two Light oil paintings, please email me melanie.farmer@gmail.com

Sugarloaf Ski Area, Carrabassett Valley, Kingfield, Maine

Here is a painting of Sugarloaf Ski area. When you are driving north on Route 27, you catch a glimpse of a portion of it now and then, and then! All of sudden you come around a corner and the whole mountain looms up in front of you and you gasp in surprise and say "oh, my gosh!" Here is a little painting of it as you would see it from what is known as "oh, My Gosh Corner".
Columbus Day weekend I will be with many other artists at the Base Lodge, Summit Hotel, Sugarloaf USA. Why don't you take advantage of a pleasant ride amidst the warm autumn colors and get an early start on your Christmas shopping?

Maine - Lupine in Rangeley

This painting is showing many mountains, the popular Saddleback and I don't know the others, but they are very beautiful in the distance. Many fields in Rangeley are full of lupine and of course the vistas are magnificient. A joy for any landscape artist.
This 10 X 8 painting has been sold but if you are interested in a similar one (I never do exact duplicates), please contact me by email.

Sugarloaf from North Branch of the Dead River , Maine

My third and final painting while I was up at Cathedral Pines is from the causeway above the Pines, looking down over the Bigelow Range. Sugarloaf Mountain peeks up there in the center of it all. I got up very early to catch the early sun. It was lovely and quiet. A mother duck brought her large brood very near where I was painting. The light changed quickly as the mist rose and the shadows changed, but I captured the essence of the dawn. The early sunlight made the little islands glow on the east side while the west side remained dark.

Maine - The Horns, North Branch of Dead River

This is the second painting from the Causeway at the North Branch of the Dead River. Late in the day a big cloud came over, darkening "The Horns" making them stand out against the softness of the afternoon and look so magnificent. A lone red kayak added to the scene with two people paddling slowly down the river. Many blackbirds entertained me with thier songs while enjoying the marshy area. It was a lovely time to be painting that scene and the bugs weren't too bad.

This is an oil on panel, 10 X 8. If you are interested in purchasing this painting, please email me. melanie.farmer@gmail.com $169 framed in a 2” gold frame (plus shipping and, if in Maine, sales tax).

Bigelow Range and Cathedral Pines paintings

Cathedral Pines is a lovely family campground in the town of Eustis, Maine. The sites on the North Branch of the Dead River have fantastic views. I did several paintings there and will post them here on my blog. The first one is done from the Causway where the road curves around the bend in the river and crosses over it. I set up in the back of my jeep with plenty of bug spray applied. It was a misty day and before long it started to rain and the painting became soft and misty looking. It shows the Bigelow Range with the Horns and Cranberry Mountain. Both of which I had climbed a couple of years ago.

If you are interested in purchasing it, please email me at melanie.farmer@gmail.com.

A Painting a Day - Cobscook Bay Sunrise

We just made reservations for a Downeast vacation, where I go and paint with my artist friends. It is a bit of heaven and everywhere and anywhere there is a scene to paint. I just love it there! So while I'm in that mode, I found a little sunrise scene where a funny island rises above the mist and just for a moment looks like a magnificent monument.

Small's Falls

This is the third painting I have done of Small's Falls in Rangeley since I have been creating a "painting a day". (well, almost)
It is a lovely spot, along Route 4 along the road to Rangeley and Saddleback Mountain, to stop and have a picnic, do a short hike, or go for a quick swim in the cold mountain spring water, or just to have a look around at the beautiful scenery and feel the power of the water rushing down over the falls from the mountains above. A special place that will touch you forever with the magic it holds.

If you are interested in purchasing this painting, framed or unframed, please email me. SOLD - but I would be happy to paint a similar one. melanie.farmer@gmail.com

Maine - Tumbledown and Mt. Blue, Lake Webb, Weld - SOLD

SOLD!

Today I painted a scene I'd been wanting to paint since last fall. This nice warm spring weather makes me think of warm summer days on a lake as the sun is setting and the shadows are getting long. This particular oil painting is 14 X 11 on panel. It is of Tumbledown and Mt. Blue at Lake Webb, in Weld. It is one of my favorite places and the mountains are a wonderful climb.
If you would like to purchase this painting, unframed or framed, please email me.

Quoddy Surf and Grand Manan

I have been jolted out of hibernation by phone calls inquiring about my paintings,a few recent sales and calls to art shows. So here I go again. This is a 16 x 12 oil painting on panel which I did one summer while staying at Whiting, near Lubec, with some of my fellow artists. I love that whole area! It is so picturesque. This one is titled Quoddy Surf & Grand Manan. I can't wait to return again this year and paint some more of those wonderful scenes, especially the fireweed! We rent a house and each day go out and paint in groups or sometimes by ourselves. Then in the evening we share what we have done and our daily experiences. Please email me if you are interested in purchasing this painting.

St. John River To Allagash, Maine

While snowmobiling up in "The County" (Aroostook), I took lots of photo of the winter scenery to work from. This one is the St. John River along the trail to Allagash, a place where we went to have a wonderful lunch and get warmed up. It was a beautiful day but bitter, bitter cold.

Birches on a Lake in Maine

I feel like Cinderella, trying to get this in before midnight! Guess that means I have the "daily painting" bug now? Anyway, since I didn't get home until late, from work and bowling, I decided to do a small winter birch scene. These were a lot of fun when I was painting with watercolor and now I'm finding they are great fun in oil too. This is approxamately 3.5 X 6 on gessoed paper. When it is dry, I'll mount it on board. It could be yours for $49 unframed or $69 framed, just email me.

A Painting a Day - Study of Onions

Today I wanted to make a still life so I looked around and found a bag of onions. I love onions, raw or cooked and this is all about painting what I love. Therefore I placed three of them on a dish towel in my studio and painted them on gessoed paper. It is approximately 7 X 5 and I will mount it on board when it is dry. If you absolutely HAVE to have this onion painting, please email me.

A Painting a Day - Small's Falls, Rangeley, Maine

Today I decided to do a painting of a very popular place along Route 4 to Rangeley, Small's Falls. Last summer I hiked up along the trail beside it. Beyond this falls you see in my painting, there is another smaller one. Off on the other side of the hill another branch has another wider falls. It is all very spectacular and powerful. No wonder so many young folks hang out there and occasionally dive off the high rocks into the pool below! This is an oil on gessoed paper, which I will mount on board. It is approxmately 5.5 X 7.5. If you would like to own this lovely piece, please contact me by email.

Sebago Lakes - Maine

Here is a painting I did on location at Sebago Basin. It is a small area that looks into the larger Sebago and Little Sebago Lakes. There is a dam near where I sat which lets water into a canal. The scene reminds me of Downeast where I go to paint in August. The weather was a warm and sunny 68 degrees and no snow on the ground. Very unusual for January in Maine. This is a 10 X 8 oil on panel done with a pallet knife technique. If you would like to own this painting, please email me. melanie.farmer@gmail.com SOLD!
