Bald Mountain in Weld is a wonderful little hike for the first one in the spring or any time you feel like a short but robust climb. It has great views along the way of Mt. Blue and Webb Lake. At the top you can see many mountains, lakes and towns near and far. The wild flowers along the trail are lovely in the spring.
In turn, Bald Mountain can be seen from many places in the surrounding towns and is quite well known. Along the road to Weld and at it's base is a sweet little pond, surrounded by bushes, birches and other trees holding back the soil, making for a nice arrangement for a painting.
It makes you want to grab your canoe and get paddling. On your wall, you can imagine it all year round.

Mt. Blue Pond

Mt. Blue Pond is tucked away in the woods a few miles from Route 4 in Avon. A local historian brought it to my attention earlier this year and I just had to go see for myself as I did not recall ever having been there. On the way in I passed a very old cemetery and made a mental note to stop and check it out on the way back.
When I arrived, there were quite a few people near the shore, enjoying picnicking and fishing. As I chatted with a fellow from Portland, I wondered how someone who lives so far away knows these places, when I, who lives just on the other side of Mt. Blue, does not.  I made my way through the muddy landing to the edge of this small pond, and was amazed to suddenly see Mt. Blue so close to my face! If it did not have the tower, which was rebuild a few years ago, I would not have known it was Mt. Blue. What an absolutely wonderful spot!
On my way out, I did stop at the cemetery and, as I suspected, found many of my Hunt and Haines ancestors buried there. They have been in my genealogy records for many years, but I just had never gone to see where they were buried. I lingered awhile, took pictures of the stones, imagining what life was like, what the landscape was like, or what the people were like living so long ago in the shadow of the magnificent Mt. Blue in Maine.
I will be back to visit that area again soon.

Mink Island Looking West

It was a warm, sunny morning when Linda and I checked the tide and walked out to Mink Island to paint. We climbed over slippery seaweed and rocks until we each found our spot, set up and painted. It was a short but rugged hike up around the other side but I had to see what the view was from there, while Linda stuck to her canvas. We had our lunch, relocated time and again. Hated to leave but did not want to chance having to wade back to shore. This watercolor on paper is 10 X 3.25, double matted to 14 X 6.25 and shrink-wrapped.  If you are interested in purchasing this lovely watercolor for $100, please contact me via email. melanie.farmer@gmail.com.

Pond Lilies in Maine

From time to time, I like to paint pond lilies. While they aren't plentiful around me, occasionally I do pass by a pond full of them. It would be fabulous if I had my own pond of lilies like Monet did. This one is a 10 X 8 oil on panel framed in a 2" gold frame. If you are interested in purchasing it, please email me. SOLD! melanie.farmer@gmail.com

Thunder Clouds over Bigelow - Flagstaff Lake, Eustis, Maine

We love to go to Cathedral Pines Campground in the summertime and it is not so far that I cannnot commute to work. But on my days off I roam around there and paint many scenes, often out of the back of my jeep. Most of them I sell rather quickly as it is a very popular place and always produces a typical western Maine feeling. This view is from one of the few water sites, which is actually on the Dead River. It is very wide there and flows directly into Flagstaff Lake. I can't wait for summer again to get back up there and paint some more!

If you are interested in purchasing this 18 X 6 Original Oil on panel framed in a 2" gold frame, please email me. $199 (plus shipping and, if in Maine, sales tax) melanie.farmer@gmail.com

A Pair of Mallards - Maine Lakes

In the spring there are many visitors by water. Here are a pair of mallards looking for some food and a place to nest. While my friend fed them pieces of bread, I was busy taking their pictures. After eating and splashing around in puddles on my lawn, they left and went to my neighbors to their usual nesting place for the summer.

Day Lilies on Varnum Pond

Since I was going to be in a show held at Robin's Flower Pot, a lovely greenhouse business, I decided I should paint a few floral paintings. Here is one of those lovely orange Day Lilies that grow wild along the road or the shore of a body of water. Here in the serene mist of a Varnum Pond morning, they brightened the day.
